Course Reading Assignments:

Reading:
We'll be reading one book together: Teachers and Machines: Classroom Use of Technology Since 1920
You'll choose a book to read for the second half of the semester. I'll have some suggestions but you can also choose your own.
In addition, there will be a variety of web-based "readings" that include both text and multimedia.
We'll also be collecting research related to the various technologies we study.

Other Assignments:

The assignments in this course have two purposes:
1. Allow students to experience digital tools first hand
2. Create tools that can be used by K-12 practitioners who are making decisions about how to best use digital tools for professional development and instruction

Allow students to experience digital tools first hand: (45% TOTAL)
  • Blog: You will create a blog (or use an existing one) to comment on the course readings and discussions.
  • Diigo: You will create a Diigo account (or use an existing one) to share web sites with the rest of the class and highlight and annotate online readings.
  • Second Life: You will create an avatar and attend at least one event in Second Life in addition to the class meeting
  • Elluminate: You will attend at least one webinar through Learn Central prior to hosting our own
  • Twitter: You will contribute to class Twitter account
  • Ning: You will join and participate in a Ning (You can choose: I would recommend either Classroom 20 or VSTE)

Create tools to be used by K-12 practitioners: (45% TOTAL):

For these assignments, you will adopt a specific technology of your choice and create a Horizon report style presentation and a 3 to 5 minute video that shows the tech being used and talks to a teacher or ITRT about the technology
  • Research, design and develop a research report on the instructional application of a particular digital technology tool or resource for either K-12 or adult education (Horizon report) (15%): You will present these materials during a class in April and as part of a webinar. This will be the technology for which you develop your video.
  • Video case study (30%): You will produce a 3 to 5 minute video that focuses on a particular technology being used by a particular educator. It should include both the affordances and constraints.

Classwork, attendance, readings, etc. 10%

Grading Policy:
I will evaluate all work with the assumption that you wish to receive an A in the class. I'll monitor your work and let you know what needs to be done, if anything, to bring it up to that standard.
